Understanding your benefits

What we check before therapy starts

Therapy is usually billed under your plan’s behavioral health (mental health) benefit, which may be managed by a different company than the one on your card. Therapy and testing benefits are checked separately.

  • Whether your plan’s network includes Cogniscribe and services with Dr. Anglin
  • Your copay or coinsurance per session
  • Your deductible and whether it has been met
  • Any session limits or authorization requirements
  • Whether couples sessions are covered under your plan

Verification is not a guarantee of payment. We walk you through what we find before you start.

Members located in Partnership counties can typically be seen by telehealth, after we check eligibility and benefits. Whether your benefits apply to services with Dr. Anglin is confirmed when we check your plan.

Costs

How therapy billing usually works

We share what your plan reports before you start, so there are fewer surprises.

Copay or coinsurance

Most plans charge a set copay or a percentage of each session’s cost.

Deductible

Some plans require you to meet a deductible before therapy benefits begin.

Referral or authorization

Some plans, such as Kaiser and UC SHIP, typically require a referral first. Medi-Cal plans may require authorization.

Session limits

A few plans limit the number of sessions or require periodic reviews.

Couples sessions

Couples therapy is not always covered as a behavioral health benefit.

Private pay

If you prefer not to use insurance, or a service isn’t covered, private pay is available.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can I use insurance for therapy?

Cogniscribe Psychology works with several major insurance plans, and we typically check how your plan applies before you start. Coverage depends on your specific plan, so we verify your benefits before your first session. Whether your benefits apply to services with Dr. Anglin is confirmed when we check your plan.

Is couples therapy covered?

Not always. Some plans cover couples sessions only in certain situations. We check your plan and explain your options, including private pay. Couples therapy is provided by Mason Anglin, PsyD, a California Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT 121211) and Registered Psychological Associate (PSB94029529) at Cogniscribe Psychology.

What about UC SHIP?

UC SHIP is on the Cogniscribe network list. Students typically need a referral from campus Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) or Student Health first, so we check referral status before scheduling.

What about Medi-Cal?

Cogniscribe works with Carelon Behavioral Health, including eligible Medi-Cal members, and with Partnership HealthPlan of California members whose mental health benefits are managed by Carelon. We check eligibility first.

What if my plan isn’t listed?

Behavioral health benefits are sometimes managed by a different network than the one on your card. Send us your details and we’ll check. Private pay is also available.

Will I know my cost before I start?

We share what your plan reports about copays, deductibles, and coinsurance. Final costs depend on your plan’s processing of each claim.
