About learning evaluations

When effort and results don’t line up

A learning and academic evaluation looks at how a person takes in, processes, and shows what they know. It can help clarify whether a specific learning disorder, attention difficulties, anxiety, or something else is getting in the way.

Testing looks at academic skills alongside cognitive abilities such as reasoning, memory, and processing speed, so recommendations fit the whole person.

Who provides evaluations: Psychological testing is provided by Mason Anglin, PsyD, a Registered Psychological Associate (PSB94029529), under the supervision of Youssef Nakhla, PsyD, a licensed psychologist (PSY 36042), at Cogniscribe Psychology.

Is this for you?

Common reasons families and students reach out

  • Reading, spelling, or writing that stays difficult despite support
  • Trouble with math facts, calculation, or problem solving

  • Questions about whether ADHD, anxiety, or a learning disorder explains the struggle
  • Wanting documentation to support an accommodation request

What’s included

An individualized evaluation

History & goals

School history, prior testing, current challenges, and what you hope to learn from the evaluation.

Academic & cognitive testing

Standardized measures of reading, writing, math, and the thinking skills that support learning.

Recommendations

Practical strategies and, when clinically appropriate, recommendations relevant to school or testing accommodations.

Every evaluation includes a written report and a feedback session. Schools and testing agencies decide eligibility for accommodations. Some plans limit coverage for testing that is primarily educational, so we check your benefits first.

How it works

What to expect from an assessment

Initial discussion of concerns and goals

We begin with a thoughtful conversation to understand the challenges, history, and goals you (or your child) are facing, so the evaluation fits your needs.

The evaluation

Clinical interviews, standardized testing, and careful observation, paced thoughtfully so you are comfortable and the results are accurate.

Feedback session & written report

Every evaluation includes a feedback session, where results are reviewed in clear, straightforward language, and a written report with practical recommendations for next steps.

Insurance

Insurance for this evaluation

Cogniscribe Psychology works with several major insurance plans, and we typically check how your plan applies before you start. Coverage for testing and therapy varies by plan, diagnosis, and medical necessity, so we verify your benefits and any authorization before you start.

Don’t see your plan? Behavioral health benefits are sometimes managed by a different network than the one on your card. Send us your plan in the screening form and we’ll check. Private pay is also available. See all plans →

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What ages are evaluated for learning concerns?

Children, teens, college students, and adults. Let us know the age and the questions you have in the screening form.

Can an evaluation help with school or college accommodations?

When clinically appropriate, a report can document findings and recommendations relevant to accommodation requests. The school, college, or testing agency decides eligibility.

Is this the same as testing through my child’s school?

No. School evaluations focus on eligibility for school services. A private evaluation looks more broadly at learning, attention, and emotional factors, and the report belongs to you.

Does insurance cover learning evaluations?

It depends on your plan. Some plans cover testing when it is medically necessary and limit testing that is primarily educational. We verify your benefits before scheduling.

Where does testing happen?

Most academic testing is completed in person at the Fair Oaks office. Some parts, such as interviews and feedback, may be done by telehealth.
